Oct 12: U.S.-Taiwan Maritime Cooperation in the Asia-Pacific

Event Description

On October 12, please join the Global Taiwan Institute for a public seminar exploring maritime cooperation between the United States and Taiwan. This timely event will feature a panel of defense and maritime security experts, including GTI Senior Research Fellow David An, Ian Easton of the Project 2049 Institute, and Alex Sullivan of the Center for a New American Security (CNAS), in a discussion about past, present and future maritime security issues in the Asia-Pacific. The panel will be moderated by GTI Executive Director Russell Hsiao, and will focus on the potential for collaborative maritime efforts in the region. A light lunch will be served.

Panelists

David An was an East Asia Political-Military Affairs Officer at the U.S. State Department for six years, beginning in 2009.  He was the architect of the first Taiwan political-military visit to the U.S and also worked closely with the U.S. Congress on arms sales to Taiwan, as well as serving as a U.S. adviser to the United Nations General Assembly. Prior to his fellowship at GTI, Mr. An was a Senior Project Manager for THAAD missile systems at Lockheed Martin. He is currently engaged in Ph.D. research on the political economy and security of East Asia. He holds an M.A. from UC San Diego and a B.A. from UC Berkeley.

Ian Easton is a Research Fellow at the Project 2049 Institute, where he conducts research on defense and security issues in Asia. He worked as a China Analyst at the Center for Naval Analyses (CNA), and has been a Visiting Fellow at the Japan Institute for International Affairs (JIAA). Ian holds an M.A. in China Studies from National Chengchi University in Taiwan and a B.A. in International Studies from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Ian’s research has been featured in major media outlets in the United States and Asia. He has testified before the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission, and lectured at the U.S. Naval War College, and Taiwan’s National Defense University. 

Alexander Sullivan is an Adjunct Fellow in the Asia-Pacific Security Program, where he focuses on US-China relations, maritime security, regional military modernization and U.S. alliances, and the role of energy in geopolitics. Mr. Sullivan has been widely published in U.S. and international outlets. Prior to assuming his current position, he was an Associate Fellow at CNAS. Mr. Sullivan holds an M.A. in Chinese History from Columbia University, where he focused on Chinese economic and security policies toward Mongolia and Central Asia and on China in a wider Eurasian context. He has a BA from Columbia College.
