Nov 9: Strategic Ambiguity under the New US President

Event Description 

On the day after the United States elects its next president and commander-in-chief, please join the Global Taiwan Institute for a discussion about the future of strategic ambiguity in U.S. policy towards Taiwan. Our panel will examine both the policy’s historical context, discuss its parameters, and assess its utility going forward. Panelists include former US government officials and staffers, who have been intimately involved in Taiwan and Asia policymaking, as well as leading thinkers on cross-Strait issues.

Panelists

Joseph A. Bosco served as both Director of Asia-Pacific Disaster Relief and Humanitarian Affairs (2008-2010) and China Desk Officer (2005-2006) for the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD). He is a member of the U.S.-China Task Force at the Center for the National Interest, and a non-resident Senior Associate at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS). Prior to his OSD service, Mr. Bosco taught courses on Taiwan, China and cross-Strait issues in the Asian Studies program at Georgetown University. He was also a non-resident Senior Fellow at the Atlantic Council, and served as a monitor during the historic 2000 elections in Taiwan. Mr. Bosco received his A.B. and LLB degrees from Harvard University and his MA in International Law from Georgetown University Law Center.

Christopher J. Griffin has been Executive Director of the Foreign Policy Initiative (FPI) since January 2013. Previously, he served as legislative director to Senator Joseph I. Lieberman (ID-CT), advising the senator on the full range of legislative proposals and key votes.  Prior to joining Senator Lieberman’s staff, Mr. Griffin was a research fellow at the American Enterprise Institute for Public Policy (2005-2008), where he focused on U.S. foreign and defense policy toward the Asia-Pacific. Mr. Griffin’s writings have been published in the Washington PostWall Street Journal, and New York Times. Mr. Griffin received a B.A. in international studies from Austin College in Sherman, Texas, and an M.A. in international studies from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies in Washington, DC

Elbridge Colby is the Robert M. Gates Senior Fellow at the Center for a New American Security (CNAS), where he focuses on issues relating to defense strategy, U.S. alliances, intelligence, and related issues. In 2012, he served as the deputy head for national security personnel on the Mitt Romney pre-transition effort and senior campaign adviser. Before that, he served for over five years in the U.S. Government, including as policy advisor to the Secretary of Defense’s Representative for the new Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty and as an expert advisor to the Congressional Strategic Posture Commission. Mr. Colby’s writing has appeared in a variety of outlets and he speaks regularly to government, expert and public audiences worldwide. He is a recipient of the Exceptional Public Service Award from the Office of the Secretary of Defense and the Superior and Meritorious Honor Awards from the Department of State. He is a graduate of Harvard College and Yale Law School.
