ROBERT WANG is a Senior Policy Advisor at Covington & Burling LLP and was a career Foreign Service officer in the U.S. Department of State from 1984 to 2016. He served as the senior U.S. official for APEC from 2013 to 2015. From 2011 to 2013, Robert was the deputy chief of mission at the U.S. embassy in Beijing and from 2006 to 2009the deputy director of the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT). He was an adjunct professor at the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service from 2015 to 2016, and a visiting fellow with the Freeman Chair in China Studies at CSIS from 2009 to 2010.
Robber is also a senior associate with the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS). He attended the Industrial College of the Armed Forces at the National Defense University (2000–2001) and earned his Ph.D. in political science at the University of Iowa in 1976. He is the author of Taiwan’s Vibrant Democracy and Beleaguered Economy (CSIS, August 2016).
