Event Description

Please join the Global Taiwan Institute on Wednesday, April 12 for a public seminar that will cover trends in Taiwan’s security environment and defense policy. Against the backdrop of the Quadrennial Defense Review’s release, talk of increased defense spending, new weapons programs, and the People’s Liberation Army’s growing capabilities, we will feature analysis from noted experts Ian Easton (Project 2049), Michael Mazza (AEI), Amy Chang (Harvard) and Eric Gomez (Cato). A lively discussion will follow, moderated by GTI Senior Fellow David An.

Panelists

Amy Chang is an Affiliate (Non-Resident) with the Belfer Center’s Cyber Security Project at the Harvard Kennedy School. Her current research examines cybersecurity and technology policy issues, U.S.-China relations, U.S. foreign and national security policy, and international relations in Asia. Ms. Chang was formerly Staff Director of the Asia and the Pacific Subcommittee at the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs, where she was responsible for federal oversight and legislation on political, security, and economic issues in the greater Indo-Asia-Pacific region. Ms. Chang has also worked at The Asia Group (TAG), the Center for a New American Security (CNAS), Albright Stonebridge Group, and Defense Group Inc. Ms. Chang is a graduate of Harvard University John F. Kennedy School of Government and Brown University. Ms. Chang is also an officer in the U.S. Navy Reserve.

Ian Easton is a Research Fellow at the Project 2049 Institute, where he conducts research on defense and security issues in Asia. He worked as a China Analyst at the Center for Naval Analyses (CNA), and has been a Visiting Fellow at the Japan Institute for International Affairs (JIAA). Ian holds an M.A. in China Studies from National Chengchi University in Taiwan and a B.A. in International Studies from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

Eric Gomez is a policy analyst for defense and foreign policy at the Cato Institute. His research focuses on regional security issues, military strategy, and nuclear and conventional deterrence. He received his Master’s in International Affairs from the Bush School at Texas A&M University.

Michael Mazza is a research fellow in foreign and defense policy studies at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), where he analyzes US defense policy in the Asia-Pacific region, Chinese military modernization, cross–Taiwan Strait relations, and Korean Peninsula security. Mazza has contributed to numerous AEI studies on American grand strategy in Asia, US defense strategy in the Asia-Pacific, and Taiwanese defense strategy, and his published work includes pieces in The Wall Street Journal Asia, Los Angeles Times, and The National Interest. Mazza was recognized as a 2010-11 Foreign Policy Initiative Future Leader. Mazza has an M.A. in international relations from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced and International Studies and a B.A. in history from Cornell University. He has lived in China where he attended the Inter-University Program for Chinese Language Studies at Tsinghua University in Beijing.
