About the Event
The Global Taiwan Institute (GTI) is pleased to invite you to a public policy seminar titled “Taiwan’s Connections to Regional and Global Security.”
Recent years have seen increasing concern over rising cross-Strait tensions, as well as debates in both Taiwan and the United States over a host of controversial defense issues: including the status of U.S. arms sales and deliveries to Taiwan, the progress of Taiwan’s defense reforms, and the size and composition of Taiwan’s defense budget. Amidst these discussions, far less attention has been given in the United States and internationally to how the shifting security dynamics regarding Taiwan are affecting the defense policies of other states, both in the Asia-Pacific region and in the broader global community.
This seminar will provide discussion of some of the major defense policy responses being made by other countries around the world—amidst rising tensions in the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea, China’s increasingly aggressive military posture, and uncertainty regarding the direction of US policy.
The event will include a panel discussion with Kitsch Liao (Atlantic Council), Dr. Renato De Castro (De La Salle University, Manila), Yuki Tatsumi (Institute for Indo-Pacific Security), and Dr. Tsiam Siong-Ui (詹祥威) (Institute for National Defense Security Research, Taipei). It will then feature a keynote speech and moderated discussion with Ms. Dovilė Šakalienė (current member of the Lithuanian Parliament, and former Lithuanian defense minister).
Doors will open at 9:00 AM, and the event will begin at 9:30 AM. If you plan on attending in-person, please RSVP by June 2, as seating is limited. A light breakfast will be provided.
Please direct questions or concerns to Senior Programs Manager Abby Fu at afu@globaltaiwan.org.
