Mark Stokes

Mark Stokes is a retired Lieutenant Colonel and the Executive Director of the Project 2049 Institute in Arlington, Virginia. A 20-year U.S. Air Force veteran, Mark served as a military attache at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing and as senior country director for the PRC and Taiwan in the Office of the Secretary of Defense. After retiring from military and government service and before joining Project 2049 in January 2008, he briefly worked in the private sector on Taiwan. Mark’s main focus at Project 2049 is Taiwan, cross-Strait relations, PLA strategic force modernization, military political work, and Chinese space and missile industry. He holds a B.A. from Texas A&M University, and graduate degrees in International Relations and Asian Studies from Boston University and the Naval Postgraduate School. He has working proficiency in Chinese.
