Phelim Kine

Phelim Kine is POLITICO’s Washington-based China correspondent and is the host of the weekly China Watcher newsletter. Kine is a graduate of Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada and has more than two decades of experience reporting in and on China in roles ranging from Beijing-based foreign correspondent at Dow Jones Newswires in Beijing and Hong Kong-based human rights researcher at Human Rights Watch to environmental campaigner at the DC-based nonprofit Mighty Earth. Kine began his journalism career as features writer at Taiwan’s English language daily China News and then worked as managing editor at the Cambodia-based Phnom Penh Post. He was a financial sector reporter at Dow Jones Newswires in Beijing for three years before moving to Indonesia as the DJN bureau chief in Jakarta. Kine then spent five years as a Hong Kong-based China researcher at Human Rights Watch. Kine’s career highlights include the selection of one of his Taiwan stories for inclusion in a Taipei museum exhibit and a death threat from former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte.
