Oct 26: The Cyber Frontier in US-Taiwan Relations

Event Description

Please join the Global Taiwan Institute and a panel of experts for a public seminar focused on the technical and policy dimensions of cybersecurity in Taiwan’s unique threat environment, and ways to enhance U.S.-Taiwan relations in the cyber frontier. This event will feature Steven Adair, with the cybersecurity firm Volexity; Yuster Yu, who has held key positions in Taiwan’s government, diplomatic corps and armed forces; and Mark Stokes (invited), executive director of the Project 2049 Institute. The panel will be moderated by GTI Executive Director Russell Hsiao.

Panelists

Steven Adair is the founder and CEO of Volexity, LLC, a security firm specializing in assisting organizations with network security monitoring, incident response, forensics, threat intelligence, and trusted security advisory. Prior to founding Volexity, Steven was the Director of Cyber Intelligence at Verizon Terremark, where he lead and built their efforts to track emerging and advanced threats with a core focus on activity related to cyber espionage. Prior to working at Verizon Terremark, Steven ran the Cyber Threat Analysis Program within the Office of the CIO at NASA, which was responsible for proactively detecting, mitigating, and preventing advanced targeted attacks and cyber-intrusions across the Agency.

Yuster Yu works as a Cyber Security Consultant in Washington, D.C., after having served as a Commander in the Taiwan Navy (retired). He was also Assistant to the Secretary General and Deputy Secretary General of Taiwan’s National Security Council, and an Assistant Attache at the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States (TECRO). He received his B.S. in Computer Science from the Virginia Military Institute, his MA in Strategic Studies from Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, and completed Officer Training in Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) with the US Pacific Fleet.

Mark Stokes is a retired Lieutenant Colonel and the Executive Director of the Project 2049 Institute. A 20-year U.S. Air Force veteran, Mark served as a military attache at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing and as senior country director for the PRC and Taiwan in the Office of the Secretary of Defense. Mark’s main focus at Project 2049 is Taiwan, cross-Strait relations, PLA strategic force modernization, military political work, and Chinese space and missile industry. He holds a B.A. from Texas A&M University, and graduate degrees in International Relations and Asian Studies from Boston University and the Naval Postgraduate School.
