Robert Maguire is Vice President for Research and Data at Citizens for Responsibility and
Ethics in Washington (CREW), a nonpartisan watchdog that uses legal action and investigative
research to hold government accountable. He leads a team tracking political spending, political
conflicts of interest, government contract abuses, and corruption, while also supporting CREW’s
legal and policy work.
Previously, Robert was the Political Nonprofit Investigator at OpenSecrets.org, where he
launched and ran an award–winning effort to build the most comprehensive public data on dark
money networks in U.S. elections. His research on dark money, corruption, and conflicts of
interest has been cited in Congress, state investigations, Supreme Court decisions, and major
news outlets. He has written for and appeared in the Washington Post, New York Times, NPR,
CNN, and MSNBC, and has collaborated with academics at Harvard, Wesleyan, and elsewhere.
In 2014, he received the Society of Professional Journalists’ Sigma Delta Chi Award for Public
Service in Online Journalism.
Robert holds a B.A. in English from Clemson University and a master’s in U.S. foreign policy
from American University. While studying for his master’s, Robert worked full time in the Cultural
Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office (TECRO) in Washington,
D.C. He has also studied and worked in France and Taiwan.
